Review: Tiger Bills Restaurant

Last week, we were invited along to try out Tiger Bills restaurant in Torquay.

For those who are not familiar with Tiger Bills, they are a family-friendly restaurant chain who bring together the East & West - with two deliciously mouth-watering menu's to tempt you - giving you the choice of the best of Thai street food and the best of the Western grill offering the traditional favourites such as baby back ribs, juicy steaks and delicious burgers!

I love the concept of combining these two dining styles, as so often families are torn when deciding on a place to eat out - but when a restaurant brings two styles together in this way it makes life so much easier - spicy noodles and Thai green curry for Mum & Dad, and burgers & chips for the kids - perfect!

Jon & I had actually previously been to Tiger Bills in Exeter - in actual fact, it was where we had our very first proper date!!! (Aaaaah!!!) - so it was somewhat surreal to be going back there again.

But this time we were going to the Torquay branch, which we hadn't even realised existed until a few weeks ago when we were visiting a nearby restaurant and noticed it across the street.

From the outside, I would say that Tiger Bills perhaps looks a little deceiving - it would strike me as perhaps a bar or somewhere dedicated to the young & trendy, not somewhere I would imagine to be open for lunch or to be family-friendly.

Once you get inside - the whole perspective changes!

As you can see, the decor is really stunning and the restaurant couldn't be any cleaner.

The kitchen is clearly visible from the restaurant which always reassures me as I know there's nothing being hidden from sight, and the washrooms and baby change facilities were also immaculate.

The staff were very friendly and accommodating, and made a big fuss of Tyne which is always a big plus in my book!

He was given some crayons and a little fun book to colour in, which was handy.

We decided to try out the different menus for the purpose of the review, I went with the American menu and Jon tried the Thai side of things.

For starter I chose the BBQ Ribs & Sweet Potato Fries (£5.95)  - The ribs were delicious and so tender that the meat literally fell off the bone, and the sweet potato fries were crisp and light - a lovely accompaniment. I would perhaps say it was a little on the large side for a starter but I was sharing the fries with Tyne anyway, so that worked out well!

Jon chose the Thai version of the ribs - the Seekrong-Moo-Yang (£6.10)

Again, the meat was cooked to perfection and fell off the bone. The Thai Sweet Chilli dipping sauce was beautiful and complimented the ribs very well. This was a perfect sized portion for a starter.

For the main course, Jon chose the Chicken Khang Phed (£7.70) which is red curry paste with coconut milk, served with bamboo shoots, peppers, long beans and carrots - and served with egg fried rice.

This was absolutely delicious - it tasted so authentic, I didn't see the chef but I would bet good money that this was a Thai chef! The curry was smooth and creamy with just the right amount of kick to it, and the rice was fluffy and light.

A really delicious, moreish dish.

I chose the chicken Fajitas - The chicken, peppers, mushrooms and onions were perfectly spiced and served on a sizzling platter - my tortillas were fresh and soft, and the accompanying guacamole, tomato salsa and sour cream were delightful.

There was plenty of everything, sometimes with these sorts of dishes it can be easy to skimp on something but I felt that there was plenty of meat, the right amount of tortillas - in fact I was stuffed after 3 and gave the last one to Jon as I simply couldn't manage it.

All in all our meal was thoroughly enjoyable - the food was faultless, the restaurant was stylish and spotless, and the staff were friendly and knowledgable - what more could you ask for?

I noticed that Tiger Bills run a 2 course Thai Lunch menu for £7.95 so I will certainly be heading back to take advantage of that deal! Jon & I have both been craving that delicious Thai curry again ever since our visit!

Tiger Bills are currently located in Torquay, Exeter, Birmingham, Consett & Whitley Bay and they also have a takeaway menu!
