Autumn brings shorter days, cooler temperatures and the vibrant hues of golden leaves. But just because the seasons are changing, it doesn’t mean that travel is off the cards. In fact, there are some beautiful destinations to discover in the autumn months.
As many people seek escapes that align with the school calendar or quieter off-peak periods, October holidays offer a unique opportunity to enjoy a range of destinations that boast mild temperatures and fewer tourists.
Here are some of our favourites:
Cyprus
If you’re seeking warmth, Cyprus is a fantastic choice. With an average temperature of around 25°C in October, the island offers a summer-like escape well into the season. This is perfect time if you want to avoid the summer crowds but still enjoy sunbathing on golden beaches, or swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s also a great time of year to explore historic sites like the ancient city of Kourion or the Tombs of the Kings in Paphos, without the intense heat of July and August.
The Troodos Mountains also offer breathtaking autumn foliage, providing a cooler contrast to the coast. Vineyards in the region begin their harvest so you can enjoy local Cypriot wines alongside fresh seasonal produce.
Turkey
The weather here remains pleasantly warm, especially along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, where the summer heat gives way to a more comfortable climate. Cities like Istanbul also become more manageable to explore, with less stifling temperatures and fewer tourists crowding the major sites.
In Cappadocia, it’s a magical time for hot air balloon rides over the fairy-tale landscape of chimneys and valleys. The cooler weather makes it ideal for hiking and exploring the ancient rock-cut churches and underground cities. The Lycian Way is an epic long-distance hiking trail that is best experienced in the crisp autumn air.
Japan
If you’re willing to venture a little further, Japan is a sight to behold. The seasonal colours, known as koyo, provides stunning displays of red, orange and yellow leaves, rivalling its famous cherry blossom season in beauty.
Kyoto, with its temples and gardens, is especially magical during this time, while Tokyo’s parks, including Shinjuku Gyoen and Meiji Jingu Gaien, provide city dwellers with a taste of nature.
Japan’s harvests bring an array of seasonal foods to enjoy with freshly grilled sanma (Pacific saury) and delicious matsutake mushrooms.
Canada
As one of the best places in the world to see fall foliage, Canada’s landscapes transform into a sea of crimson and gold, particularly in the eastern provinces of Ontario and Quebec.
The vibrant colours can be best enjoyed in national parks like Algonquin Provincial Park or Mont-Tremblant. Visitors can hike, canoe or simply drive through these regions, taking in the majestic colours of the maple trees.
Autumn also brings harvest festivals, an array of pumpkin treats and apple orchards across the country.
Whatever your interests, the autumnal months offer a chance to discover new locations and immerse yourself in some unique experiences. And with many destinations easily reached by plane from the UK, it’s easier than ever to visit these spectacular countries.
