3 ways to stay motivated with healthy eating in 2025

Somehow, we’ve reached that time of year again when we all promise to take better care of our health. Queue gym memberships, early morning running clubs and diet fads that seem to only last a month or two at most.

Learning how to make these healthy habits last is crucial for their long-term success, and there are some simple ways of making this happen. From making your healthy eating habits easier to keeping food fun, here’s how to stay motivated in 2025.

  1. Make it easy for yourself

With most things – healthy eating included – you only need heaps of motivation if that thing you’re trying to do is difficult or inconvenient. With this in mind, the first thing you should do is make your healthy eating habits as easy to adopt as possible.

For example, if you want to eat more fish, instead of buying whole salmon, gutting and roasting it, buy a tin of John West instead.

Of course, you can still make fancy fish dishes every now and then, but don’t try to make something so relatively high-effort into a regular habit. Keep it as simple as possible, and you’ll find it much easier to stay motivated throughout the year.

  1. The 80/20 rule

Another really important thing to note about healthy eating habits is the importance of medium-level consistency. This is captured quite nicely in the 80/20 rule, which states that you should eat healthily 80% of the time and eat what you want 20% of the time.

This rule (or something like it) is generally much more effective than trying to eat healthily 100% of the time.

Even if you have an iron will at the beginning and manage to stay strong for half a year or so, it’s almost impossible to stay dedicated to such a strict diet. Eating well most of the time is far more beneficial for your long-term health, and results in a more generally enjoyable lifestyle.

  1. Keep food fun

Lastly, it’s almost impossible to stay motivated about something you simply find no joy in. The long-term health benefits of salads for breakfast simply aren’t enough to keep most people going in the present! Motivators have to be relevant to your actual experience to stay exciting and effective, otherwise they just become downright depressing.

Luckily, healthy foods don’t have to be boring or taste bad – quite the opposite. Keep on switching your meals up as the weeks go by, and find some useful sources of inspiration. With a good cookbook and an inspiring cooking channel or blog in hand, you should be good to go for years to come.

Keeping these basic tips in mind when you start your healthy eating mission in 2025 should massively increase your chances of success. The main things to watch out for is that you keep it easy, sustainable and fun. As soon as any habit becomes too much of a chore with no sign of tangible benefits, it becomes much harder to sustain over time.
