Simple Ways to Teach Empathy and Raise Compassionate Kids

Teaching children empathy and compassion from a young age is vital for raising kind, considerate human beings. Instilling these qualities early on can help counteract some of the negativity children see in the world. Here are some simple, effective ways to nurture empathy and compassion in children.

Model Empathy Yourself

Children learn by example. If you want to raise an empathetic child, be sure to demonstrate empathy yourself in your interactions with others. Show compassion, care, and understanding when engaging with people in front of your child. Your child will pick up on this modelling and start to mirror your empathetic behaviour.

Talk About Emotions

Have open discussions with your child about emotions – their own and those of others. Name emotions out loud and talk about what certain feelings might look like. “Olivia looks sad, she must be disappointed her toy broke”. Helping children identify emotions is key for building empathy.

Read Stories About Compassion

Books provide great opportunities to teach children about empathy and compassion. Choose stories that showcase characters being kind, helping others, or overcoming differences. Ask your child how the characters might be feeling and what they would do if they were in the same situation.

Encourage Perspective Taking

Help your child understand different perspectives by discussing how other people might think/feel differently than they do. “Even though you don’t like spinach, Grandma loves it, so we should make her some when she visits”. Taking this perspective taking lays the groundwork for empathy.

Praise Kindness

When you catch your child demonstrating kindness or compassion, be sure to take notice and praise them for it. “I saw you share your toy with that boy. That was so kind of you!” Positive reinforcement will motivate them to continue behaving empathetically.

Volunteer as a Family

Hands-on volunteering is a powerful way to nurture empathy and compassion in kids. Bring your child along when volunteering in your community – at a food bank, animal shelter, children’s hospital etc. They will learn the importance of helping others.

Role Play Scenarios

Practice empathetic responses with your child through imaginative role play. Take turns acting out different scenarios – getting teased at school, celebrating a friend’s birthday, welcoming a new sibling. Discussing feelings and reactions will help build empathy skills.

Encourage Random Acts of Kindness

Challenge your kids to complete random acts of kindness, small and large. Hold the door for someone, make cards for nursing home residents, do a chore for a sibling. These acts nurture thoughtfulness and compassion daily.

Welcome Foster Children into Your Family

If your family decides to become foster carers with Fosterplus, the experience can nurture empathy and compassion in your own children. Explain to your kids how foster children may be feeling uncertain or anxious. Encourage your children to make the foster children feel included and welcomed through simple acts of kindness like inviting them to play, making them a card or keeping them company if they seem lonely. With guidance, foster siblings can learn from each other. Though the primary motivation for fostering should be providing a stable environment for foster children, the experience can also help increase empathy, understanding and emotional intelligence in the entire household.

Raising compassionate, caring kids takes effort but is enormously rewarding. If you instil empathy in your children early on, it can last a lifetime. With role modelling, open communication and consistent nurturing of their kind qualities, your children will grow into thoughtful, understanding adults.
