Professionals today are living in a fast-paced world and it can be hard to find time to look after yourself. Trying to find time to look after your physical and mental wellbeing can feel impossible. However, there are smaller rituals you can incorporate into your daily life which will help.
Here are five rituals for you to consider and tips to help you incorporate them into your life.
Mindful movement
Office jobs are a popular choice for many careers, but this does mean that workers are spending a lot more of their time being sedentary. After a long day at work, the thought of a long run or session in the gym may not sound that appealing.
Why not try a more relaxed form of movement? You could join a yoga or tai chi class, or even go for a walk outside in your local park. Getting your body moving improves your physical health as well as having benefits for your mental health.
Digital detox
Taking a break from work often involves looking at your phone and doomscrolling. Checking social media and news sites is not always the best idea when you are feeling stressed, anxious or demotivated.
Instead, try to take a break from your screens. You could use your commute to read a book or work on a hobby instead. If you are guilty of using your phone before bed, make a conscious effort to leave it out of reach and you will find your quality of sleep improves.
Nourishing nutrition
It has long been known that there is a link between what you eat and your mood. Food is a source of comfort for so many, but it can be easy to slip into bad eating habits.
An increase in processed foods, sugar and excessive caffeine can all be the cause of a decrease in your mood. Although many of these foods provide a short-term good feeling, they often lead to a crash which leaves you feeling worse in the end.
Sleep sanctuary
Sleep comes so easily to some people, but others spend their evenings tossing and turning, waiting for their dreams to start. If you struggle to drift off, why not try something new in your pre-bed routine?
Create a relaxing bedtime routine that works for you. This could involve a warm bath or shower with some relaxing candles, followed by your skincare routine. Taking time to relax your body will help you stay relaxed as you slide into bed.
If you are still struggling, try listening to some guided meditation or relaxing music through noise-cancelling headphones. Blocking out excess noise will prevent you from starting awake just as you are falling asleep.
Constructive creativity
When you do have moments of free time, take advantage and unleash your inner creative. You may want to pick up a hobby you had as a child such as painting or playing music. Alternatively, you could start something new like journaling.
Being creative allows you to let go of stress and focus on something completely different. Using different parts of your brain helps you to relax and feel more satisfied in your personal life.
