Exploring Costa Rica’s Rainforests: What to Expect

Part of what makes Costa Rica so appealing is the country’s vast natural riches. There’s more biodiversity crammed into this small country than you’ll find anywhere else on the planet, thanks largely to the presence of a sprawling rainforest ecosystem. If you’re going to make the most of the time you spend in this part of the world, then you’ll need to do a little bit of preparation. So, what might you expect from a visit to the legendary cloud forests during your Costa Rica holidays?

Incredible Biodiversity

It’s easy to talk about biodiversity in terms of raw numbers. But in order to truly appreciate the variety of plant and animal species here, you’ll need to visit. Immediately, you’ll be struck by the number of monkeys, sloths, toucans and frogs, as well as the millions of species of insect.

The Best Rainforest Regions to Visit

There’s more than one rainforest destination to consider in Costa Rica. Your experience might vary dramatically, depending on where you go. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is home to around five hundred separate species of orchid (and counting), which should give you an idea of how much diversity is on offer, here. There are rope bridges, zip lines, and nighttime tours that will acquaint you with the unseen side of the forest. Then there’s the Tortuguero National Park, which is famously road-free. You’ll instead move from lagoon to mangrove swamp via a network of canals, and see countless turtles as you do so. Also worth looking at are the Corcovado and Arenal parks, which are each packed with amazing species.

What Daily Life in the Rainforest Looks Like

Getting the most from a visit tends to mean taking advantage of a guided tour, and getting up very early so that you can catch a glimpse of those animal behaviours that are only observable as the sun is coming up. You can expect hikes, canal trips, and walks through the canopy to be fairly physically gruelling, but there are experiences available to suit visitors of all abilities.

Preparing for a Rainforest Adventure

It’s fair to say that if you haven’t come equipped for the rainforest, you’ll struggle to have a good time. Your shoes should be robust, and your clothing breathable. Make sure that you carry plenty of insect repellant, and waterproof layers so that you can deal with the occasional downpour.
