How to Clean Up Your Family Budget

Getting your finances in order can make family life much more pleasant and rewarding. But it’s something that many of us put off, because we lack the confidence to deal with our money-related problems, or we simply don’t know where to start.

Let’s run through a few of the steps that will set you on the way toward prosperity.

Assess Your Current Financial Situation

To begin with, you’ll need a budget. This should clearly set out all of your income and expenditure, in clearly labelled categories. It might include earnings from your investments, as well as your jobs. It might also separate your outgoings into non-essential items, like streaming television subscriptions, and essential items like utilities.

For a detailed view of your spending, you might make use of special budgeting tools and apps. Or, you might devise a spreadsheet that will do largely the same thing.

Reduce Unnecessary Expenses

Once you have a clear view of your financial affairs, you might start to see exactly how much you’re putting into non-essential items of spending each month, and how it breaks down. If you’re only watching a few hours of Netflix every so often, then it might make sense to cancel the subscription and invest in a Bluray player instead. On the other hand, you might find that you’re spending a great deal on restaurants.

If your spending is out of control, then this is the first place you’ll want to look. Think about how much value you’re really getting from your money, and adjust your subscriptions (and your habits) accordingly.

Optimise Essential Costs

Just because an area of spending is essential doesn’t mean that there’s no scope to save money. In the case of your heating bills, for example, you might switch to another provider – or simply phone up and ask for a discount. If you threaten to leave, then the chances are you’ll be offered a better deal, especially if you’re a loyal customer.

You can use apps to shop around for the best deals on everything from electricity to broadband to groceries. In the supermarket, there’s a particular opportunity for savings. Pick up a loyalty card, and take advantage of bulk discounts.

You can also buy in bulk in other, perhaps surprising, places. Taking out a multi-car insurance policy can make a lot of sense in households with more than one driver.

Increase Household Income

Families which earn more tend to end up wealthier. This might seem obvious, but anything you can do to improve your professional opportunities will be helpful. That might mean establishing clearer rules for privacy and productivity when you’re working from a loud, busy home. Or, it might mean developing a hobby into a side hustle, or leveraging your existing skills to earn extra money through tutoring.
